STONE TOWN, CIUDAD MÁGICA | ZANZIBAR

 La puerta de entrada a la isla  de Zanzíbar es su capital, Stone Town, ciudad declarada patrimonio de la Unesco, principal puerto de esclavos de África en el pasado y también puerto de especias. A pesar de este combo multicultural, el hecho de que la isla y el país de Tanzania (donde pertenece Zanzíbar), sean de religión musulmana, está muy presente en todos sus rincones. De hecho hasta hay carteles en varios puntos de la isla, donde te pides que por favor respetes su cultura y estes vestido por las zonas de ciudad.

Stone town is the capital and the main entrance to the isle of Zanzibar. Historically, it was the main slave trading port of Africa and a spice selling venue. Nowadays, it has been declared world heritage by Unesco.It is a multi cultured place, perhaps due to its history and the fact that it is of Muslim religion, a reality that permeates the country and its most hidden corners. In fact, there are several signs all over the island, asking tourists to please be respectful of their culture and be dressed at all times in city areas.


Esta enigmática capital, es famosa por todo lo que les dije antes, pero además, fue el lugar de nacimiento de Freddy Mercury, un dato muy curioso que alimenta aún más su leyenda. Famosa por sus múltiples puertas, cada una pensada, talladas, coloridas, con apliques, con dibujos, la ciudad entera es una especie de museo viviente.

This enigmatic capital is famous for many reasons but above all, it is the place were Freddy Mercury was born. A very curious piece of data that feeds its legend even more. It is also known for its multiple doors, each one very well thought, sculpted in detail, colorful and drawn all over. The whole city is like a living museum, with a life of its own.

Les recomiendo probar la comida callejera del mercado que se monta todos los días al atardecer sobre el agua, pero a tener cuidado con los gatos, que abundan en la zona y te empiezan a acosar por comida donde te vean un poco novato. También visitar el mercado de especias, aunque vayan con paciencia extra, porque a muchos vendedores no les gusta que no les compren. En algunas ocasiones hasta nos perseguían diciéndonos "estúpidos" o que la gente rubia era mala, fue raro, pero asumo que es una táctica que usan para asustarte un poco y que les entregues algo de dinero.
Nada de esto nos detuvo y caminamos día y noche por una ciudad que parece detenida en el tiempo, con algunos turistas que lucen igual de confundidos que nosotros, por llegar un lugar que de otro planeta.

I would recommend you try the street food in the market that shows up every day at sunset, near the shore. But do be very careful with the cat population, which is pretty abundant, and will have no qualms harassing you for food if they sense you have a weak spot!
You should also visit the spice market, but be very patient since many sellers will take offense if you don't buy from them. Truly, it happened to us! In some occasions they even called us names, and said that blond people were mean and evil... It was a very weird experience, but I am guessing it is a tried and true technique to scare tourists a little and get them to lose some cash.
None of that stopped us and we walked day and night, every day, through a city that looks like it is frozen in time, with a few tourists looking as puzzled as we did, walking in what could very well have been another planet.
