Masai Mara

Desde muy chica tuve gran ilusión con respecto a conocer Kenya, las historias que venía en la TV acerca del Masai Mara, la migración de animales desde el Serenguetti en búsqueda de agua, y las tribus africanas, eran como Disney para la pequeña Rubiamala.

From a very young age I had great enthusiasm about Kenya, the stories that i watched on TV about the Masai Mara, the migration of animals from the Serenguetti in search of water, and the African tribes were like Disney for the little Rubiamala.

A medida que fui creciendo, desarrollé también mi interés por otros aspectos del país, como sus grandes ciudades o las formas en las que están organizadas las sociedades. Tener la oportunidad de visitar este país, me ayudó sin dudas a entender un poco más de África, o a empezar a entenderlo. Necesitaba viajar a este destino, porque en mi mente no existía no conocer un continente tan poderoso, y lógicamente me pasó lo que esperaba, ahora solo quiero volver.

As I grew up, I also developed my interest in other aspects of the country, such as its large cities or the ways in which societies are organized. Having the opportunity to visit this country, helped me to understand Africa, or to begin to understand it. I needed to travel to this destination, because in my mind it was imposible to ignore such a powerful a continent, and logically It was so much more than what I expected.

Cuando la puerta de entrada africana fue Johannesburgo, adentrarnos en el continente, meterse en la verdadera África fue todo un viaje aparte. Nuestra primera estadía en Nairobi fue en el Hotel Four Points by Sheraton Nairobi Hurlingham., un espacio moderno que se levanta en el medio de una ciudad polvorienta con población gigantesca. Durante el día me relajaba un poco en la piscina del Hotel, que tienen un rooftop genial con bar y restaurant incluído, y por la noche cenamos también ahí los mejores mariscos. En nuestra primera estadía en Nairobi visitamos el Masai Market, que es un mercado itinerante de arte local. Vendedores de todas las tribus de Kenya se acercan a la capital para comercializar sus productos. Lógicamente hay que regatear a morir y además hay que tener en cuenta de que mucha de las cosas se repiten.

When the African gateway was Johannesburg, entering the continent, getting into the real Africa was a separate trip. Our first stay in Nairobi was at the Four Points by Sheraton Nairobi Hurlingham., a modern space that rises in the middle of a dusty city with gigantic population. During the day I relaxed a bit in the hotel pool, they have a great rooftop with bar and restaurant included, and at night we also had the best seafood there. In our first stay in Nairobi we visited the Masai Market, which is a moving local art market. Vendors of all Kenyan tribes are approaching the capital to sell their handmade products. Logically we have to bargain a lot and also we have to take into account that many things are repeated.

Al otro día y bien temprano partimos rumbo al Masai Mara, una reserva natural que limita con Tanzania, repleta de animales salvajes y rodeada por tierras de los indios Masai.  Lo más recomendable es viajar al Mara en la época de las migraciones de los animales, donde miles de especies como cebras, gacelas, impalas, ñnus, búfalos y otros herbívoros vienen subiendo desde el Serengueti ( en Tanzania ) en busca de agua. Fuimos testigos de como lentamente se fue poblando esta savannah con cientos de miles de animales, que no solamente no le temen al hombre ni a los autos, sino que aparte les damos mucha curiosidad, y se acercan a los caminos solo para vernos pasar.

The next day we had a very early departure for the Masai Mara, a nature reserve bordering Tanzania, full of wild animals and surrounded by lands of the Masai Indians. My advice is to travel to the Mara in the time of animal migrations, where thousands of species such as zebras, gazelles, impalas, buffaloes and other herbivores come up from the Serengueti (in Tanzania) in search of water. While we witnessed  how this savannah was slowly populated with hundreds of thousands of animals, we where amazed by the fact that they not only do not fear the man or the cars, but also they where very curious, and they approach the roads only to see us pass.

Fanática de los animales como soy, estaba desesperada por bajarme del vehículo que me transportaba en esta aventura. En nuestro caso teníamos un Safari privado que hace que todo sea más flexible y logré acercarme a pocos pasos de los hipopótamos y hasta hicimos un picnic en pleno Masai Mara.

I´m a heavy animal lover, so I was desperate to get out of the vehicle that transported me in this adventure, and touch them. In our case we had a private Safari that made everything more flexible and managed to get closer to the hippopotamus and even had a picnic in the middle of the Masai Mara, touching was not possible. :(
